Deciding that it was best to work in the wedding resort hotel—closer to the action, so to speak—Maya was smuggled back to her original suite that night. Though they had discussed at great length the ways John Spencer was involved in Sandra’s death, neither Maya nor the agent was sure about Brandon.

Since Maya’s night of running, Brandon had had minimal activity, less the falsified press release from the family. Maya couldn’t say with emphatic certainty, but the chances Brandon could be held guilty on some level were great.

Against Maya’s better judgment, Agent Owen directed her to continue the guise with Spencers. He told her he would be on site, which gave her a sense of confidence that she hadn’t been able to wrangle up since the beginning of her trip. Vindicated and prepared to return to work, Maya decided now, since she knew the actual score, she could put all of her efforts into finding justice.

Settling back into her room, Maya was too strung up on adrenaline to sleep. Knowing she could move freely, she wondered how she might explain her absence to inquiring minds that would undoubtedly come to call. But she recalled Agent Owen’s plan…

Remember, when they come looking for you, and they will—tell them you have been picked up and questioned. That should satisfy them, at least for a while, until Johnny-boy gets tired of waiting.

Right now, no one knows you are with me on this. As far as they're concerned, you are trapped alongside them, waiting for the real police to get here. I cannot say when, but I am sure by the time you are back at the resort, the lines of communication John has all over this island will have told him.

However outlandish Agent Owens’ plan was, the surety of his voice comforted Maya the most.

Do you promise you will get to me first? I am scared. I want to do this, but I am terrified I have already gone too far.
